Senior Center
The Nezperce Senior Citizen organization was started in 1975 to provide meals, entertainment and services to area seniors. Meals are provided twice a week at no cost to seniors. A small donation is asked for anyone else wishing to eat at the Senior Center.
Meals currently are being served at the Senior Center, 501 Cedar St., and delivered to home-bound residents Mondays and Thursdays. Weekly menus are posted in the Lewis County Herald, which is available at The Only Store. Business meetings are held once a month and officers are elected annually. Entertainment – such as music, pinochle and bingo – is provided occasionally.
- For more information about the Senior Center, call Mary Ann Hess at 208-790-4820 or Brad Fischer at 208-791-8174. Contact the Senior Center via email at [email protected] or by calling 208-937-2465 on Mondays and Thursdays.

History of the Senior Center:
In the beginning, there were 49 charter members. The first meetings started with potluck dinners and pinochle. With the help of Area Agency on Aging in Lewiston, they began meeting at the Nezperce Hotel, where a dinner was served. The next step was to rent the Christian Church basement and hire a cook. This was an excellent place, except they were limited on their activities: no dancing, no cards, and no bingo.
After unsuccessfully trying to negotiate a lease with other groups, the Senior Center finally found a home. The Brethren Church, built in 1912, was an active church for many years. The Assembly of God bought the Church and held services until the membership declined. They gave the church to the City of Nezperce. The basement area became the new home for the Seniors. The remodeling came in two phases, with grants of $89,140 and $81,750.
With much donated labor and materials, the Nezperce Senior Center is now a beautiful facility with a light, airy dining and multipurpose room.
The Senior Center has been used for weddings, receptions, birthday celebrations, family dinners, bridge clubs, garden clubs, etc. It is rented for a nominal fee.
The Seniors are very proud of the center and they owe a debt of gratitude to all persons who have so freely given of their money, materials and talents to make this center a lasting legacy for Nezperce.
The sanctuary of the church is now an auditorium for plays, meetings and other events.

Nezperce Museum & Historical Society
The Nezperce Historical Society was formed to preserve and promote the history of the Nezperce Prairie through artifacts, photographs, family histories, memorabilia and Lewis County Records; to educate the youth of today, to commemorate the pioneers of yesterday and to honor the members of this community. To do that they are collecting, documenting, conserving and making accessible to the public information, artifacts and education programs which interpret Nezperce’s cultural past, present and future.
The Nezperce Museum building was built by the Masonic Lodge in 1954. It served the Masons for many years. In 1991, it was sold to the City of Nezperce and turned over to the Nezperce Centennial Committee, which opened it to the public in 1995. It was used as a designated Visitor Center to house antiques donated or loaned to be put on display for public view.
In 2009, a group of ladies took on the challenge to organize, arrange and label the many archival items. The group was incorporated in 2010 and are the custodians and caretakers of the renamed Nezperce Museum.
Many improvements have been made to the building and surrounding area. A French drain tile has been installed, lower level windows removed to stop leaks and the outside was recently painted. Outdoor exhibits have been added – a blacksmith shop (complete with tools of the trade), outdoor privy and soon, the old jail house will be moved in and added to the outdoor exhibits. With the aid of a computer and programs, the group is now able to keep track of all donations and/or loans to the Museum. Inside, new displays are being put together, a genealogy center, kitchen area, general store area and many other areas. More improvements are scheduled as soon as monies allow.
The Museum currently isn’t open any set days other than during Prairie Day (second Saturday in July) and Lewis County Fair (last weekend in September). Dates of both of these events will be posted on the City of Nezperce web site. The Museum is closed during the winter months.
Appointments to view the Museum can be made by calling Rhonda Schmidt at City Hall, Monday through Thursday, at 208-937-1021 or Sue Justesen at 208-680-8745.
If you would like to make a donation to the Nezperce Museum, it can be mailed to: Nezperce Historical Society, PO Box 117, Nezperce, ID 83543.
The Museum is seeking new members. Contact Rhonda or Sue if interested.
(Back to top)Recycling Center

Recycling in Nezperce has had great support since it was instigated. The city of Nezperce had to empty the blue bins located by City Hall/Shop once every three months or month and a half.
- On average it takes a whole day to load the bins, haul them to Lewiston, empty them and haul them back and unload.
- A full load of recyclables grosses around $120 so of course the fuller the load the more money.
The City of Nezperce is asking help from the public by doing a few things prior to dropping off your items. With your assistance the process will run smoother and quicker for all.
Proper Disposal for Rolloffs:
No More Plastic at Nezperce Recycle Bins
- Plastics will no longer be accepted at the Nezperce Recycle bins located in the park across from the city shop. There is no place currently accepting plastic so the city will no longer have a blue bin set up for it.
- No Plastic Bags: These plastic bags should be emptied into the bins and then the bags disposed of – there are green garbage tots at the city shop for plastic bag disposal. The maintenance department has been removing these plastic bags.
- When the bins are full – PLEASE WAIT TO DROP OFF YOUR RECYCLABLES. We are aware the bins are full and making arrangements to empty them. We ask for your patience as sometimes it takes a few days to schedule a delivery. Weather and road conditions play a part in scheduling.
- Thank you for supporting the recycling program. If the time is taken to remove lids, smash bottles and cans, dispose of the plastic bags and not throw in non-recyclable items, the program will run better for all.
- Thanks Nezperce for making the recycling center a success. Please continue bringing all your newspapers and cans to the recycling center bins beside the City Shop. Check out the following for the complete list of what specific items will be accepted and all the do’s and don’ts.
- Please contact City Hall at 937-1021 if you have any ??’s.
